A friend from Amtgard came over and taught Morcant how to make these, so we are going to give it a shot. It only took him one afternoon, even with the woodburning!

One Project Completed

Our local herald Lady Rohese de Dinan came over and plowed through all the blazonry with us on Thursday and I also got some help from the heralds in the SCA Heraldry Chat group, but after five years I finally have a device that I like that appears to be clear of conflicts.So that's one unfinished project done. I have the whole family's paperwork in order to be turned in at the business meeting tomorrow night! This is Morcant's and it is only fair to point out that he sketched this out and came up with the design on his own. Mine ended up almost resembling his slightly but I suppose it is nice that they will look good together. The boys were a little more difficult because they had never registered names and I've been after them for a year to pick a period and stick with it. Our oldest son will be 17 in August. Period Herbal Preparations: Oxymels

So sekanjabin seems to be a pretty popular beverage drink in the SCA. David Friedman refers to it as such on page 125 of "How to Milk an Almond..." He also laments being unable to find the recipe referred to in period literature. I would put forth that it probably wasn't a beverage to be found in cookbooks, rather a medicinal to be found in those types of texts. When I first tasted it, I recognized it immediately as a medicinal oxymel. I would offer the conjecture that "sekanjabin" is simply the Persian word for a medicinal oxymel which at some point (probably not pre-1600) morphed into a popular beverage. Keep in mind coca-cola was once tonic blend of medicinal herbs. Some of the earliest evidence of oxymels being made from different medicinal herbs and used as remedies can be found in the Hippocratic treatise On Regimen in Acute Diseases written around 400 BCE. Music and Dance

Habeas Corpus. We are a family that loves music so that will definitely be a focus for our learning. That's how we first became acquainted with some members of our shire.My daughter and I have been , performing with a group that dances at Renaissance Faires and other local festivals. Most of our dancing has been limited to English Country dances many of which are so "new" as to be out-of-period for the SCA. I think they will always be my first love. I do love a well-staged, Jane Austen ball. For the SCA, we need to work on learning the older Italian and French dances. Gaelic Storm and Geneviève Due to our real life shenanigans, we know a bit of Irish dance, too. Geneviève performs with an Irish dance group here in Iowa City. She's had a fairly busy month.
